By Ashley Bryan
Our friend and neighbor, a celebrated artist, storyteller and writer now in his 90s living on Little Cranberry Island has now written an amazing award winning book about his experience as a Black soldier in World War II including being on Omaha Beach on D-Day. Using sketches, photographs, letters, and very personal text Ashley tells of the injustices specific to Black soldiers in a segregated army. Being Ashley, he also tells of people who were kind to him and how his passion for art sustained him. An inspirational book for all ages but recommended highly for middle school readers. Offers hope and inspiration.
